The UK Pharmaceutical industry employs over 73,000 people with 27,000 dedicated to R & D. In addition there are also currently an additional 250,000 support jobs in related industries.
The sector accounts for 0.6% of UK GDP and is the second largest exporter by value. 25% of the world's top 100 medicines have been discovered and developed in the UK. 88% of Pharmaceutical companies in the UK currently have a turnover of £50m or less. (MAT Dec 2006).
